Where it started

Dr Jackson became Clinical Lead for Day Surgery in York in 1991. He redeveloped and increased the size of the day surgery unit as day surgery became more important to the Trust. The last redevelopment created a leading edge facility with 6 theatres (including laminar flow theatre) and a specialised extended stay area to enable larger procedures to be performed throughout the day.

He gained considerable management experience with 2 periods as Clinical Director of Theatres, Day Surgery, Intensive Care and Outpatients.

Clinical Informatics and Safety

Dr Jackson became Clinical Safety Officer in 2011 following completion of the Clinical Safety Officer training. The role was expanded to that of a fulltime Chief Clinical Information Officer in 2012 with the aim of combining the risk assessment and safe design and implementation of IT systems across the hospital with a new role of acting as a link between Clinical colleagues and our Systems and Network Service which includes the Information and Coding Teams. York Teaching Hospital has its own in house developed IT system with a very active development team – this required the development of a risk management system that deals both the development (DCB0129) and the deployment of our systems (DCB0160). Extensive experience in managing the safe design and implementation of health software was gained in working in this hybrid system.

Experience in implementing an IT system in a hospital with little or no IT was gained when York took over Scarborough Hospital. He supported this successful project and gained extensive experience of working with clinical colleagues to ensure the safe implementation of systems across 3 hospital sites.
